The police in Ekiti State have freed Mr. Bunmi Ojo, the personal assistant to a former governor of the state, Mr. Segun Oni.

Ojo was arrested at about 6.30am at his residence on Tuesday on an allegation of gunrunning and was detained.

However, THE PUNCH gathered that Ojo was released on bail around 7pm on Tuesday, following the intervention of from some notable politicians in the state.

Many chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party were said to have stormed the headquarters of the state command on Tuesday evening to ensure that Ojo did not sleep in the police cell.

Although the Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh, when contacted on the telephone said that he was not aware of Ojo’s release, Oni’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Wale Ojo-Lanre, confirmed the development to our correspondent on the telephone.

The police had last week arrested eight robbery suspects in Ido-Ekiti, including the wife of a police inspector and another woman. It was gathered that the leader of the gang had alleged that the ex-governor gave the gang a N3.9m mobilisation fee.

The suspects, who said they were armed by the former governor through his personal assistant, added that they were recruited to protect Oni, members of his party and intimidate members of other political parties in the rerun election of 2009.

Meanwhile, Oni has dared the police to arrest him if truly there is evidence that he armed the suspected robbers.

They said the former governor promised to pay a N10m balance. Based on this, Oni’s personal assistant was arrested and detained at the headquarters of the state police command in Ado-Ekiti.

But Oni, referring to the leader of the gang, said at a press conference in Ifaki-Ekiti on Tuesday that he had nothing to do with the gang.

However, Governor Kayode Fayemi has said he will not join issues with his predecessor.

The governor, whose views were delivered by his Special Adviser (Media), Mr. Mojeed Jamiu, said, “We are focused on delivering on our promises to the people. We don’t want to be distracted.

“If Mr. Segun Oni has any problem with the arrest of his PA, he should direct his anger at the police.”
