Nigeria's former Chief of General Staff and deputy to the late dictator, Sani Abacha, Oladipo Diya, was been laid to rest amid tears in his hometown Odogbolu, Ogun State on Saturday.

Recall that Diya died on March 26, 2023.

Prior to his appointment as Abacha’s second-in-command, Diya was the chief of defence staff and military governor of Ogun State from January 1984 to August 1985.

At the funeral on Saturday, President Bola Tinubu described the deceased as a selfless and diligent leader.

The president stated that Diya’s contributions to nation-building remained a reference point for coming generations.

The president’s message was delivered by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

“Gen. Diya’s efforts towards curtailing several uprisings that threatened the corporate entity of Nigeria are legendary and these will remain indelible in the consciousness of Nigerians and sub-Sahara Africans.

“Indeed his life of selflessness and diligence in the service of the military remains a reference point for coming generations of military officers.

“His leadership and tactical prowess greatly contributed to the success of this nation.

“He implemented various reforms in the army, including training programmes and welfare for soldiers and under his leadership, the Nigerian Army witnessed significant advancement and operational effectiveness,”
Tinubu stated.

In his sermon, Bishop of Ijebu Southwest Rt. Rev. Babatunde Ogunbanwo described Diya as a lover of God and God’s duties.

Among dignitaries present at the event were the acting inspector general of police, Kayode Egbetokun; Ogun government officials, federal lawmakers, former military administrators and captains of industry.

The images from Diya's funeral stirred up a whirlwind of emotions within me. It's not often that we confront the reality of mortality head-on, but moments like these force us to reckon with our own fleeting existence. As I scrolled through the somber scenes, I couldn't help but reflect on my own mortality and the legacy I'll leave behind. It's a sobering thought but one that's been weighing heavily on my mind lately.
In the midst of processing these feelings, I found myself drawn to the idea of planning my own funeral arrangements. Direct cremation  stood out to me as a practical and no-frills option. Its simplicity appealed to me, knowing that it would alleviate any unnecessary burden on my loved ones during a time of grief.
