Italian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who was apprehended in January after 30 years on the run, has died, according to the ANSA news agency.

Denaro, 61, was suffering from cancer at the time of his detention.

Before his demise, he was transported to a hospital from the maximum-security jail in central Italy, where he was initially detained.

According to ANSA, Denaro had wanted no harsh medical treatment, and medics had ceased feeding him after he was judged to be in an irreversible coma.

He was convicted of various crimes, including his role in the 1992 murders of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

He was also held responsible for explosions in Rome, Florence, and Milan in 1993 that killed ten people, as well as assisting in the kidnapping of Giuseppe Di Matteo, 12, in order to deter the boy’s father from testifying against the mafia. The youngster was detained for two years before being slain.

Dubbed “the last Godfather” by the Italian press, Denaro did not assist in police investigations after being arrested outside a private health facility in Palermo, Sicily, on Jan. 16.

He once boasted of murdering enough people to fill a cemetery.

Although he never married, he had a number of affairs. In his diary, Denaro mentioned having a daughter but having never met her.
