Armed robbers on Tuesday attacked some residents of Journalists’ Estate, Arepo, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

PUNCH METRO gathered that the robbers stormed the phase two of the estate around 3.25 pm, shooting sporadically into the air. They snatched a jeep and robbed some people in the estate.

As soon as the residents got wind of the presence of the armed robbers, they started sending text messages to one another.

One of the texts reads, “The robbers came with a small car and parked near Ogbiti’s House. They have stolen a jeep from the house they attacked near Somoyiwa’s House.”

According to the Security Manager, Middleway Scientific Gas Limited, Mr. Efe Okoyotan, the robbers operated for about 20 minutes.

Okoyotan, who witnessed the incident, said, “At about 3.25 pm we were alerted from the Journalists’ Estate Phase One, that there was a robbery incident. We locked the two gates to the estate. But after about 20 minutes, (3.45pm), the hoodlums arrived the main gate and overpowered the men at the gate and escaped. They used a car and a Honda Pilot jeep. There were about three of them carrying AK47 rifles.”

A driver, Mr. J.A. Braimoh, and his master, narrowly escaped being killed by the robbers but their vehicle was snatched.

Braimoh said, “I was driving my oga’s car. My master was also in the car, they (robbers) just stopped us and started shooting. They ordered us to come out of the vehicle and snatched the vehicle from us. But we were unhurt.”

The incident caused an accident on the expressway and also resulted in traffic jam.

Although another driver, Mr. Bayo Aseolu, escaped, his car was mangled by a trailer on the expressway as he was trying to escape. Aseolu said he was driving into the estate when he suddenly heard gunshots and immediately reversed.

He added that as he was reversing, his car was hit by a trailer on the expressway.

When our correspondent visited the scene shortly after the robbery, residents and sympathisers were seen discussing the incident.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, confirmed the incident but added that there was no casualty.

He, however, said the snatched jeep had been recovered by the police.

He said after the incident, the police at Ibafo Station pursued the robbers who later abandoned the jeep and fled.

Adejobi added that one of the newly acquired vehicles and a team of policemen would be stationed at the estate to prevent a recurrence.
