The Kano State Police Command has announced the arrest of nine suspected foreign exchange hawkers for operating illegal Bureau De Change businesses in the state. According to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the spokesperson of the command, the suspects were found with various foreign currencies and other related items.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with personnel from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Customs Service, targeted locations where illegal FOREX transactions were being carried out. Several suspects were arrested, and exhibits such as foreign currencies, a POS machine, and mobile phones were recovered.
The arrested suspects have been charged to court for prosecution. The objective of the operation is to stabilize the foreign exchange market by cracking down on illegal financial activities. The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, commended the efforts of the security operatives involved and urged residents to report any suspicious financial activities to the police.
He emphasized the importance of operating within the confines of the law and obtaining necessary licenses for legitimate business operations in the financial sector. The CP also expressed appreciation to the people of Kano State for their support and cooperation. Residents were encouraged to report any suspicious movements or items to the nearest police station or through designated emergency contact numbers provided by the Kano State Police Command.
