In a significant operation, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have apprehended two individuals involved in the sale and distribution of illicit drug-laced chin-chin to students and party-goers in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The suspects, identified as 20-year-old hair stylist Josephine Odunu and 30-year-old dispatch rider Edesemi Ikporo, were arrested following a series of coordinated efforts by NDLEA officers.
According to a statement released by the agency's Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the interception occurred during a routine patrol in the Opolo area of Yenagoa on Sunday, March 10, 2024. Officers apprehended Ikporo, the dispatch rider, in possession of 200 grams of chin-chin infused with cannabis sativa, which he intended to deliver to a buyer.
Subsequent investigations and a follow-up operation led to the arrest of Odunu, who was identified as a major distributor of the drugged snacks from the salon where she works in the Kpansia area of Yenagoa. A search of the salon yielded an additional 3.00 kilograms of the illicit substance, bringing the total seizure to 3.2 kilograms.
Further inquiries revealed that the duo's nefarious activities extended to distributing the cannabis-laced chin-chin to students and attendees at social gatherings, including birthday parties. Ikporo was responsible for facilitating deliveries, while Odunu served as a key distributor to a wanted suspect involved in producing the drugged snacks.
The arrests underscore the NDLEA's commitment to combating drug-related offenses and safeguarding communities from the dangers posed by illicit substances. As investigations continue, authorities urge heightened vigilance and collaboration from the public in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse in Bayelsa State.
