The Edo State Police Command has reinforced its stance against the unauthorized searching of citizens' phones by officers during routine patrols and other operations, emphasizing that such conduct is unprofessional.
In a statement issued by the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, and posted on their official Facebook page, the Commissioner of Police for the state, CP Funsho Adegboye, reiterated the directive to officers to refrain from this practice. He emphasized that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed that erring officers face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The statement highlighted the command's position on the matter, aiming to inform the public, especially law-abiding citizens in Edo State, about the prohibition on searching citizens' phones during police operations.
During a meeting with the command's strategic security managers, CP Adegboye reiterated the directive from the Inspector-General of Police, stressing that officers must not engage in searching citizens' phones during routine patrols, raid operations, stop and search duties, or any other essential duties.
"The Commissioner of Police Edo State, CP Funsho Adegboye, during a meeting with the command’s strategic security managers, re-echoed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on the ban on searching of citizens’ phones while on patrol, raid operations, stop and search duties or other essential duties," the statement read.
The command remains committed to upholding professionalism and ensuring that officers adhere to ethical standards in carrying out their duties, while also safeguarding the rights and privacy of citizens.
