Prompt action by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service averted a potential catastrophe on Monday afternoon as fire threatened to engulf a building at 48 Breadfruit Street, Apongbon, Lagos.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out around 12:24 p.m., originating from the second floor of a three-story building primarily housing various hair wigs. The rapid spread of the blaze prompted an immediate response from multiple fire crews.
Firefighters from stations including Ebute Elefun, Sari Iganmu, Dolphin, and Alausa, along with assistance from the Federal Fire Service, swiftly mobilized to contain the inferno.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, praised the coordinated efforts of the responders, emphasizing that their quick intervention prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings.
"Despite challenges posed by the difficult terrain and heightened concerns among traders, the fire was successfully extinguished, preventing its spread to adjacent properties and salvaging what remains of the affected structure," stated Adeseye.
Fortunately, there were no reported casualties in the incident. Adeseye attributed the cause of the fire to the careless handling of a generator.
The successful containment of the blaze underscores the crucial role played by emergency services in safeguarding lives and property within Lagos State. As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, authorities emphasize the importance of fire safety measures and responsible handling of electrical equipment to prevent such incidents in the future.
