Iyara community, situated at the heart of Ijumu Local Government Area in Kogi State, is reeling from the aftermath of a ferocious rainstorm that wreaked havoc, leaving more than 1000 residents homeless.

Reports indicate that the destructive storm struck on Monday night, mercilessly tearing through over a hundred houses in its path, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake.

Expressing concern over the plight of the affected residents, Oba Jacob Meduten, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, appealed for urgent assistance from government agencies, philanthropists, and corporate organizations to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

In response to the disaster, the Kogi State Government issued a warning urging citizens to take precautionary measures as the rainy season approaches. Mouktar Atimah, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), emphasized the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters.

"We received reports of a natural disaster in Iyara, and our team was swiftly dispatched for an on-the-spot assessment," Atimah stated. "The collaboration with the Local Government chairman aims to provide relief to the affected victims and mitigate their suffering."

Atimah further advised residents residing in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground to avoid further risks, emphasizing the importance of securing roofs properly to withstand strong winds.

"Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo's primary concern is to alleviate the suffering of Kogi State residents," Atimah affirmed, underlining the government's commitment to assisting those affected by the calamity.

The harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of communities to natural disasters and the imperative for proactive measures to safeguard lives and property in the face of such adversities.
