The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has issued a statement concerning the devastating boat accident that led to the untimely demise of famed actor Pope Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, and four others. The tragic incident occurred in the Akpaka area, a suburb of Onitsha and Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area, contradicting earlier reports that situated the accident in Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area.

Suleiman Nicholas, the NIWA Area Manager, clarified in an interview with Vanguard that the victims were en route to Anam to participate in a movie shoot when their boat capsized in the treacherous waters of Akpaka. Out of the twelve individuals aboard the ill-fated vessel, seven were miraculously rescued alive, two bodies have been recovered, while three passengers remain missing—two women and one man.

Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway, with NIWA officials coordinating closely with the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and Marine Police. The search efforts are concentrated in the Akpaka area, where the accident took place, as teams work diligently to locate the three individuals still unaccounted for.

When inquired about the presence of Junior Pope among the deceased, Nicholas confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating that initial reports from the scene indicated that the beloved actor was indeed among those who perished in the accident. The cause of the tragic occurrence is still under investigation, with NIWA awaiting a comprehensive report from the personnel conducting the search and recovery operations. Nicholas emphasized that any current speculations regarding the cause of the accident are premature until a full analysis of the incident is completed.

The community and fans nationwide are mourning the loss of Junior Pope and the other victims, as authorities continue their efforts to bring closure to this tragic event.
