A violent encounter between two notorious cult groups, the Greenlanders and the Bobos, erupted into chaos on Tuesday night, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Victor Namabebe in the Amarata suburb of Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.
The conflict broke out around the Amarata/Ebis Mechanic area where it was reported that Namabebe, accompanied by a group believed to be part of the Greenlanders, confronted a member of the rival Bobos group, triggering a deadly skirmish. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene with gunshots and the use of other lethal weapons as the groups clashed.
The violent outbreak coincided with local residents watching the Champions League matches at various viewing centers, causing panic and fear as attendees scrambled to safety amid the gunfire.
Sources close to the situation reported that Namabebe was found severely wounded and bleeding profusely from head injuries. He was left unattended as the altercation continued, and his body was later discovered in a pool of blood.
Local sources also highlighted heightened tensions in the area, with fears of reprisal attacks looming. The involved cult groups are known to be based around the Apex Academy road, OMPADEC, Ebi Mechanic, and Amarata regions of the state capital.
Musa Mohammed, the spokesman for the Bayelsa Police Command, confirmed the tragic event. He reported that the deceased’s father, Chief Emmanuel Namabebe, informed the police of his son's death around 9 pm that night. The body has since been taken to a local morgue.
The police are actively investigating the incident, aiming to apprehend those responsible for the violence and to prevent further clashes between these dangerous groups.
