In a heartbreaking revelation, a 65-year-old suspect, Lukman Odejoju, has disclosed how the consumption of alcohol packaged in nylon allegedly led to the fatal confrontation with his mother, resulting in her death.
Reports from Vanguard indicate that the grim incident occurred in Kajola village, situated via Apomu in the Isokan local government area of Osun State.
During his appearance at the State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo, Odejoju recounted the tragic sequence of events that culminated in the untimely demise of his mother over a dispute concerning proceeds from palm oil sales.
Addressing journalists while being paraded, the suspect revealed that a heated argument erupted between himself and his mother while they were working in the farm, centering on the transfer of ownership of her palm plantation to him, which she vehemently opposed.
"In the heat of the argument, I pushed and inadvertently strangled her," Odejoju admitted, expressing profound remorse for his actions. He emphasized that he never intended for the confrontation to escalate to such a tragic outcome.
Attributing the altercation to the effects of alcohol, colloquially known as 'pelebe,' Odejoju confessed that he had consumed a sachet of the beverage prior to the fateful encounter. He lamented that the gravity of his actions only became apparent to him after the fact, and he deeply regrets his actions.
Following the altercation, Odejoju stated that he took the initiative to alert villagers and sought their assistance in addressing the situation. He stressed his genuine affection for his mother, highlighting his role as her eldest surviving child out of five children.
In a plea for leniency, Odejoju implored the government to forgive him, emphasizing that the tragic outcome was never his intention. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from the influence of alcohol in moments of conflict and distress.
