Dame Patience Jonathan, Nigeria’s former First Lady, has made it clear that she would decline any request to return to the presidential villa. Speaking at a public event on Friday, the former First Lady cited the immense stress associated with the role as the primary reason for her decision.
In a widely circulated video, Mrs. Jonathan candidly expressed her reluctance to take up the position again. "If you call me now for the villa, I wouldn’t go there. I won’t. Don’t you see how young I am? The stress is so much," she stated. She further elaborated, "The stress of Nigeria is so much. If God manages to bring you out of it, you should glorify Him. He has taken you there once, why do you want to go there again?"
Patience Jonathan, who served as First Lady from 2010 to 2015, became well-known for her memorable public speeches, often in pidgin English, and her catchphrases such as “na only you waka come.” Her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, left office in 2015 after losing the presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari.
The former First Lady’s remarks highlight the demanding nature of political life in Nigeria and her contentment with life after public office.
