
A devastating accident occurred on Friday afternoon in Imawa town along the Zaria – Kano highway, claiming the lives of 14 worshipers who had just concluded Jumat prayers.
Eyewitnesses reported that tragedy struck shortly after 1:50 pm when a trailer bearing registration number MKA 537 XN, traveling from Kaduna, lost control and plowed into pedestrians leaving the mosque. The congregation had just finished their prayers when the trailer collided with them, resulting in the tragic loss of 14 lives.
According to a statement from Abdullahi Labaran, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), nine victims were laid to rest immediately after the incident, while the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
Labaran confirmed that upon receiving the distress call, FRSC personnel swiftly responded to the scene alongside other security agencies to conduct rescue operations and provide medical aid to the injured. The driver of the trailer reportedly fled the scene following the incident.
“We received a distress call around 1:50 p.m. on June 28, 2024, and immediately dispatched our personnel and vehicles to the scene. The FRSC remains dedicated to promoting road safety and urges all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such tragic accidents,” Labaran emphasized in the statement.
The Sector Commander, Ibrahim Abdullahi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated the importance of road safety compliance among all motorists and pedestrians alike to avert avoidable tragedies.
The incident has underscored the need for enhanced safety measures on Nigeria’s highways to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
