In a gesture of compassion and support, Abdul Malik Zubairu, the Federal lawmaker representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, has sponsored a mass wedding for 105 girls who lost their parents to banditry.
The emotional ceremony took place on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Bungudu town, the headquarters of Bungudu Local Government Area. The brides, carefully selected from the 21 political wards of Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency, were joined in matrimony with their suitors in a heartfelt display of community solidarity.
Speaking passionately at the event, Zubairu emphasized his commitment to fulfilling promises made during his campaign. "During our campaign, we pledged to support families affected by banditry," he stated. "Today, I am grateful to fulfill one of those promises by sponsoring 105 brides for marriage and providing essential household items to each of them."
Each bride received comprehensive support, including beds, mattresses, wardrobes, bed sheets, and pillows. Additionally, Zubairu disclosed that each bride's dowry of N100,000 was covered by his initiative. Furthermore, to facilitate their new beginnings, each groom received N100,000, while the brides were empowered with N50,000 to kick-start their chosen businesses.
The event drew commendations from Abdulrahman Kawu-Sumaila, Chairman of the occasion and Senator from Kano State, who praised Zubairu's humanitarian gesture. He urged constituents to rally behind the lawmaker, emphasizing the importance of supporting initiatives that uplift the community.
Traditional rulers, Islamic scholars, community leaders, and politicians from the constituency graced the occasion, underscoring the unity and solidarity among the attendees.
The mass wedding not only symbolizes hope and renewal for the brides but also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities affected by banditry in Zamfara State.
