Two journalists from Kaduna, Abdulgafar Alabelewe of the Nation Newspaper and AbdulRaheem Aodu of Blueprint Newspaper, along with their families, have been freed from captivity after being kidnapped by bandits last week.
The journalists were abducted from their homes in Danhonu community, located in the Millennium City of Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna, on Saturday, July 7. Their ordeal included being taken alongside their families.
While police authorities have not officially confirmed their release, a close relative of one of the victims disclosed that they regained their freedom on Saturday afternoon.
Abdulgafar Alabelewe, who was one of the kidnapped journalists, was released along with his wife and two children who were abducted at the same time.
Confirming the release, Asma’u Yawo Halilu, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, expressed gratitude in a statement: "To the glory of God Almighty, our colleagues, Abdulgafar Alabelewe, Abduraheem Aondu, and their families have been released."
Halilu extended thanks to various entities involved in securing their release, including the Kaduna State Police Command, the National Security Adviser's office, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Inspector General of Police. She also acknowledged the support from Kaduna State government, the NUJ President, and the wider Nigerian community.
Following their release, the journalists have been transported to Abuja for debriefing by security agencies and to receive necessary medical attention. This development marks a welcome relief after a harrowing experience for the journalists and their families.
