The serene atmosphere of the Emir of Kano's palace was shattered by a suspected arson attack that engulfed a significant section of the historic Gidan Rumfa palace, where Emir Muhammadu Sanusi resides.
The fire, believed to have been intentionally set by unidentified perpetrators, erupted late Friday night around 11 pm, causing widespread damage to a palace located at Kofar Kudu. This particular palace is where the Emir traditionally holds court sessions every Monday.
Sources within the palace revealed that the assailants forcibly gained entry, ignited the blaze, and locked the doors behind them. The inferno consumed valuable items including the throne and air conditioners, leaving the palace in ruins.
Despite the severity of the incident, there were no reported casualties, ensuring relief among palace staff and residents.
Saminu Yusif Abudullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, stated that the agency had not received any distress calls concerning the fire, indicating that the incident might have gone unreported initially.
Confirming the incident, Munir Sanusi Bayero, the Chief of Staff to the Emir, issued a statement on Saturday morning addressing the fire outbreak: "On Saturday, 13th July 2024 morning, a fire incident occurred at the outer court of His Highness's Palace, Kofar Kudu. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the damage was minimal."
Bayero assured the public that stringent measures were being implemented to enhance the security and safety protocols within the palace premises. Additionally, an investigation into the cause of the fire has been initiated to prevent future occurrences and apprehend those responsible.
The incident marks a troubling disruption to the tranquility of one of Nigeria's oldest and most revered royal palaces, prompting heightened vigilance and security measures in the aftermath.
