Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has made a bold claim that some religious organizations in Nigeria exhibit more corruption than public offices.
Speaking at a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) leadership conference in Lagos on Friday, July 14, Olukoyede disclosed that the EFCC recently recovered significant sums of money from a religious organization.
"Just this last week, I have had cause to recover many millions from a religious organization," Olukoyede stated. He criticized religious leaders for pointing out faults in others while ignoring their own transgressions. "You look at the speck in someone else's eye, but meanwhile, there is a log in yours," he remarked, urging clerics to use their platforms to demonstrate integrity.
Olukoyede further criticized some pastors for living extravagantly without clear sources of legitimate income. "They appointed you a pastor, and that is when you become a big man. We don’t even know what you are doing to earn a legitimate living. You live on the ministry and the church or mosque money. You can’t even explain the source of your wealth," he asserted.
He called on religious leaders to not only preach but also exemplify good character to their congregations. His comments come after his January revelation that the EFCC uncovered a religious sect laundering money for terrorists in Nigeria.
The EFCC Chairman's remarks have sparked discussions about the accountability and transparency of religious organizations in Nigeria.
