At least three people remain trapped under the rubble of an uncompleted building that collapsed in the Sabo area of Osogbo on Sunday morning, while two others have been rescued.
The incident occurred around 8:00 am on July 14, 2024. The building, often used by hoodlums for illicit activities, suddenly gave way, causing a loud noise that alarmed the neighborhood.
“A loud sound was heard between 7:30 and 8:00 am. The house isn’t inhabited but is used by some to smoke or gamble. Some people were trapped," said Alaran, a member of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service.
The Osun State Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the rescue of two individuals from the debris. “While we await the crane, people are doing all they can within their physical capacity to break the decking and connected rods,” said NSCDC spokesperson Kehinde Adeleke.
At the time of reporting, security operatives, including the state police commissioner, NSCDC, and officials from the Osun State Environmental Management Agency (OSEMA), were present at the scene to ensure the safety of the victims. A government delegation, led by the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Mayowa Adejorin, assessed the damage and coordinated the response.
Hon. Adejorin, accompanied by Hon. Emiola Fakeye, the Governor’s Special Adviser on OSEMA, discovered another building in poor condition during their inspection. The team is working with relevant ministries to prevent a similar incident. “We inspected the collapsed building and found it had no building plans. We are reaching out to other related MDAs to enforce the Governor’s directive,” Adejorin stated.
The NSCDC had previously reported the building as an eyesore and recommended its raid by the task force and environmental body for sanitation.
State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, disturbed by the collapse, warned developers against constructing houses without approved building plans. He threatened to bulldoze substandard houses that pose safety risks.
“A building plan is not an optional step in the construction process. It prevents substandard houses that frequently collapse,” Governor Adeleke said in a statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed.
He directed the Ministry of Lands to enforce the approval of building plans, urging officials to inspect estates and development areas to ensure compliance. "We need to save lives by ensuring houses are built to standard. Substandard houses, once identified, should be pulled down before they collapse," the governor emphasized.
Governor Adeleke affirmed that the state would sanction non-compliance with building plan approvals and that proactive measures would be taken to prevent future tragedies.
