Nigerian music sensation Burna Boy has sparked controversy with his recent remarks about Nigeria, describing the country as "collateral damage" amid its current challenges. In a candid interview with Tidal, the Grammy-winning artist likened Nigeria to a mere commodity, referring to it as the "Royal Niger Company" for the British.
In a video clip that has gained widespread attention on social media, Burna Boy expressed his views on the country's origins and the long-term effects of poor governance and foreign influence on its citizens. According to the singer, Nigeria was never intended to be a nation, but rather a resource hub for British interests.
"We were never supposed to be Nigerians in the first place," Burna Boy remarked during the interview. "We are the Royal Niger Company. Essentially, we were just a company for the British to extract resources for Britain."
He went on to explain how the creation of Nigeria was a transaction between colonial powers, with little regard for the well-being of the indigenous people. "Somewhere along the line, the company decided to buy the whole place and amalgamate it. So, at the end of the day, the people who sold the place and those who bought it are the winners, while the rest of us are just collateral damage."
Burna Boy's comments have ignited discussions across social media, with many Nigerians reflecting on the country's colonial past and its lasting impact on the present.
