Taraba State University's fresh students for the 2023/2024 academic session today took the oath of matriculation with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, chairing.
Speaking at the occasion held at the university sports complex, Main Campus, the Vice-Chancellor described matriculation ceremony as a time of joy for those who have successfully gained admission and passed through the screening exercise.
The academic event marks the closure of admission exercise for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The Vice-Chancellor, said by “this ceremony, you have been formally accepted into Taraba State University and you would now be fully guided by all the rules and regulations of the University".
“In this ceremony you will be sworn and affirmed that you will abide by the laws of the University and uphold its traditions”.
“University education is normally an exciting experience, so also a great deal of social responsibility upon you as you pursue your studies”, he stressed.
The Vice-Chancellor urged them to maintain a peaceful, stable and cordial atmosphere for conducive teaching, learning and good character building.
Prof. Bako also advised them to shun all social vices such as exam malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, indecent dress, and all forms of anti-social behaviours in addition to refraining from associating with unapproved students’ clubs.
Prof. Bako assured the students of their lecturers commitment towards giving them the best in order to attain their future career ambitions.
He said it is the goal of TSU and its affiliated institutions to produce students with great capacity, saying also that it is the wish of the University to produce students with curiosity and creativity to prepare for proper engagement with the fast moving and changing complex world.
The Vice-Chancellor also advised the students to utilize the resources provided to them by their parents and guardians judiciously for upkeep and other legitimate activities while in school.
Similarly, he then enjoined them to be more security conscious and to abide by all the security tips provided for their safety.
Prof. Bako congratulated the newly admitted students into TSU community and then prayed to God to give the students the wisdom and courage to learn and to become good ambassadors of educational system.
The Registrar, Dr. Joseph Bibinu, administered the matriculation oath, with a number of Management staff, and other key staff of the University in attendance.
Before the Matriculation Oath was taken, the Vice-chancellor disclosed that, the University under his watch have addressed financial challenges by introducing internal revenue generation initiatives, including:
* Taraba State University Bakery and Pasties.
* Taraba State University Water and Beverages Factory
* Taraba State University Mushroom Farm
* Taraba State University Butchery/Meat Shop
* Restructuring of Taraba State University Printing Press.
Also, "under our supervision and the watch of the Visitor, the executive Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas we've been able to achieve the following:
* Accreditation of 53 academic programs by the NUC, as well as Professional accreditation of 6 programs by the relevant professional bodies including: Nursing Science, Environmental Health Science, Council on Legal Education, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Accounting and Engineering.
* Hostels renovation
* 50% reduction in school fees
* Improved Bakery performance and distribution of flour and sugar to the larger community
* Establishment of two new Facilities: Faculty of Computing and Artificial Intelligence, and Faculty of Religious Studies.
* Installation of Solar streets lights.
* Enhanced security measures.
* Construction of many TETFund founded projects.
Furthermore, under Prof Bako, the university have established the following institutes and centres:
* Institute for Entrepreneurship, Skills Acquisition, Innovation, Research and Digitalization (IESAIRD)
* Centre for Career Development and Employability Service (CCDES)
* Institute of Tree Crop Research in Collaboration with the Cocoa Research Institute (CRIN).
* Institute for Development Research in Collaboration with American University of Nigeria (AUN).
In a message, the Vice-chancellor highlighted the significant contributions made by our esteemed Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas since assuming office within a year.
"His administration has implemented the following noteworthy projects on our campus:
* Installation of Solar-powered streetlights , enhancing safety and sustainability.
* Renovation of the hostels, providing a comfortable and conducive living environment.
* Support for the successful accreditation of our programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC), ensuring academic excellence and quality assurance.
* Reduction of school fees for both undergraduates and postgraduates programmes, making quality education more accessible, and affordable for our students.
These efforts demonstrate our Governor's commitment to improving our institution's infrastructure, academic standards, and overall student experience, while also prioritizing the financial well-being of our students and their families.
I urge all members of the University Community to work together to achieve our objectives. Thank you for being part of this occasion.
