The Imo State Police Command has arrested five suspected members of the Black Axe Confraternity, a notorious cult group operating in Owerri, the state capital.
In a press release on September 2, 2024, the Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed that the arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Quick Intervention Team (QIT) of the command.
The suspects, identified as Uche Ibejiako, 26, from Owerri Municipal; Mariano Daniel, 24, from Delta State; Micheal Chukwuemeka, 23, from Umuokwu Izombe in Oguta Local Government Area; and Annointing Ezeh, 23, from Umugada Irete in Owerri West LGA, were apprehended in the Irete area of Owerri.
ASP Okoye noted that the arrests were part of a broader strategy to curb cult-related violence in the state. The suspects have reportedly confessed to being members of the Black Axe Confraternity, a criminal group linked to various illegal activities.
The police spokesperson also revealed that investigations are ongoing to gather additional evidence against the suspects. They are expected to face charges in court once the investigation is complete.
