SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson, hailed the operation as a pivotal success in the ongoing battle against crime in the state. The breakthrough came as part of a broader directive from Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who instructed all police units to enhance their presence in public areas to combat crime more effectively.
Following these directives, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Salman Garba, convened a strategic meeting with tactical units to formulate an effective plan to combat phone snatching and armed robbery. The result was a series of targeted operations conducted between September 1 and September 12, 2024, which led to the arrest of 26 individuals suspected of being involved in phone theft and robbery.
In addition to the 126 recovered mobile devices, the police also seized hard drugs, various weapons, and several laptops from the suspects. Kiyawa emphasized that the operations were focused on addressing the prevalent issue of mobile phone snatching within the state's urban areas.
The arrested suspects are currently under investigation at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department and will face court proceedings upon the completion of the investigation.
Kiyawa assured that the recovered phones would be returned to their owners once proper identification and verification are completed, aiming to restore justice and safety to the community.
