The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two individuals, Adebola Adewunmi, a businesswoman based in Ibadan, and Arinze Ora, an auto parts dealer, for attempting to export illegal drugs to the UK and Congo Brazzaville.
Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesman, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Sunday. The suspects were apprehended following the interception of shipments at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Friday, September 6.
Babafemi revealed that NDLEA operatives discovered 924 bottles of codeine-based syrup, weighing 135.70kg, and 5,250 tablets of Rohypnol concealed in cartons of food items destined for the UK. The cargo was presented by freight agent Owojori Olanrewaju, who was immediately taken into custody.
Further investigations led to the arrest of 58-year-old Adebola Adewunmi, identified as the mastermind behind the shipment. Her son, Adewunmi Temitope, admitted that his mother had sent the drugs from Ibadan for export. A follow-up operation on September 7 resulted in Mrs. Adewunmi’s arrest at her foodstuffs and cargo export business in Ibadan.
Owojori confessed to working with Adewunmi to send previous drug shipments to the UK, disclosing that he had been paid N2.4 million for the recent attempt and N2.1 million for a prior consignment.
The NDLEA continues to investigate the case, as authorities crack down on international drug smuggling operations.
