A 25-year-old woman, Jalen Easterling, was tragically shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend during their 6-year-old child's birthday party in Houston, Texas, on Thursday evening, September 12.
The fatal incident occurred at a home where Easterling and her new boyfriend were hosting the celebration. Witnesses reported that the child’s father unexpectedly arrived, leading to a heated argument. The altercation quickly escalated, and shots were fired, resulting in Easterling being gunned down in front of her children and partner. She died at the scene.
Felicia Adams, a neighbor, recounted the terrifying experience, telling KHOU that she and her family ducked for cover as the gunfire erupted. "My heart dropped. I was terrified," she said. "It was loud and it sounded like it was coming into my house."
Adams added that before the shooting, she overheard the suspect shouting angrily. "He was shouting and screaming... it was scary. My kids were terrified. I have a five-year-old, and she wouldn't stop crying."
According to Houston Police, there had been previous child custody-related calls to the residence. The shooter fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Tahoe and remains at large.
Lt. R. Willkens of the Houston Police Department commented on the case: "Shots were fired from the door. We don't know if it was random or directed at individuals. The female was struck in the upper extremities and was deceased here."
Authorities are confident they will apprehend the suspect soon. "If he's smart, he'll turn himself in and explain what led to this," Lt. Willkens said, suggesting that there may be additional factors behind the shooting.
As the search for the suspect continues, residents remain shaken by the tragic event, with neighbors like Adams hoping for swift justice.
