The Osun State Internal Revenue Service (OIRS) has apprehended two individuals suspected of creating and distributing counterfeit government tax receipts and clearance certificates.
Chairman Ademola Adewumi announced the arrests in a statement issued on Sunday from Osogbo, revealing that the suspects were apprehended during a statewide audit and enforcement operation aimed at curbing revenue fraud.
“The arrests were made as part of our ongoing efforts to prevent revenue leakages within the state,” Adewumi said. “The suspects were found guilty of cloning and issuing fake tax documents to the public.”
Adewumi emphasized that the crackdown on fraudulent tax activities is part of a broader initiative to ensure compliance with tax regulations and to eliminate illegal practices that undermine the state’s revenue collection efforts.
“We are committed to enforcing the rules and will not tolerate any form of tax-related dishonesty,” Adewumi warned. “Individuals involved in these illegal activities will face severe legal consequences.”
The Chairman also urged taxpayers to remain vigilant and to use authorized channels for tax payments. He advised them to utilize official banks, tax stations, MDAs, the OIRS online platform, and OIRS POS marshals to ensure they receive legitimate government receipts.
“The goal of this operation is to identify and address any individuals sabotaging the state's revenue efforts,” he added.
The suspects have been handed over to the state police command for further questioning and potential prosecution.
