The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended a 64-year-old man, Mr. Nnanna Michael, from Obinkita Arochukwu, for his alleged involvement in operating an illegal baby factory and engaging in child trafficking. The arrest occurred on Saturday at a residence on Abanafo Street, Ariaria, Aba.

During the operation, officials rescued two women from Michael's residence based on credible intelligence. The women, identified as Doris Nelson, 23, from Gombe State, and Ugochukwu Winner, 21, from Isinweke, Ihitte Uboma in Imo State, were found under distressing circumstances.

According to the NSCDC, Nelson had given birth on September 9, 2024, and sold her baby the next day to an unidentified buyer for N1.1 million. She had reportedly received N100,000 of the promised N500,000. Winner, who is seven months pregnant, was also being held by Michael under similar conditions.

NSCDC State Commandant Usman Alfadarai detailed that Michael, a father of four and former worker at a motherless home, confessed to housing pregnant women, caring for them until delivery, and subsequently selling their babies. Michael revealed that Doris Nelson was introduced to him by a contact from Abuja named Miracle. After her delivery, Michael sold the baby and promised Nelson a portion of the proceeds.

Winner was reportedly introduced to Michael by Evangelist First Samuel, who is now at large. The arrangement was for Michael to purchase Winner’s baby upon delivery and sell it to buyers.

Alfadarai indicated that Michael's illegal operations had been ongoing for some time, leveraging his previous experience at a motherless home to facilitate transactions. Michael admitted to having sold one baby last year and two this year before his arrest.

The case will be forwarded to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further legal action. The landlord of Michael's rented apartment claimed ignorance of the illicit activities and cooperated with the authorities.

In a statement, Commandant Alfadarai emphasized the NSCDC's commitment to rooting out all individuals involved in such operations. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Michael confessed to his actions, expressing regret, “I was keeping some girls in my house for their health and to sell their babies after birth. I regret this as it is not a good job to do.”

Doris Nelson, a baker from Abuja, revealed that she was directed to Aba while pregnant and had kept her situation hidden from her parents. Ugochukwu Winner stated that a classmate’s mother had linked her to Michael.

All involved parties expressed remorse for their actions.
