The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has officially launched a major distribution drive, rolling out 1,000 conversion kits across selected states to alleviate the financial burden of fuel subsidy removal. The initiative aims to cut transportation costs and support the transition to more sustainable energy sources.
At a press conference in Abuja, Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director for the initiative, highlighted that the distribution of these kits is a significant step towards lowering transportation expenses. Oluwagbemi projected that the program would generate over 100,000 direct jobs over the next three years, with plans to convert approximately three million vehicles within the same timeframe.
Commercial transport operators will benefit from a free conversion service, a move designed to ease the impact of fuel subsidy removal and reduce travel costs for the public.
Moses Onate, Warehouse Manager at the PiCN facility in Ibafo, Ogun State, provided details on the distribution process, which is operating under the 'First Come, First Serve' principle. He disclosed that 450 conversion kits have already been distributed, with an additional 550 kits ready for deployment.
Onate stressed the importance of adopting this initiative, noting that it has the potential to significantly lower fuel costs by enabling vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG), a more affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to petrol.
The initiative marks a key effort in Nigeria's broader strategy to mitigate the economic effects of subsidy removal and promote cleaner energy solutions.
