ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, has reacted to a viral video of some police officers attempting to forcefully arrest a man in Benin, the Edo state capital.
An X user who shared the video online claimed the police officers were about to ‘abduct’ the man and extort him but were stopped by the crowd. The X user mentioned that the officers were forced to abandon the man on the road after the crowd challenged them.
‘’The policemen were about to abduct this man for extortion but when citizens came together and raised an alarm, they abandoned him and ran away. This is an evidence that police brutality can stop if citizens stand together'' the X user wrote.
Reacting to the post, Adejobi said the man in question is a murder suspect and that the police had a warrant for his arrest. He said they were forced to abandon the suspect when the crowd became overwhelming.
‘’The policemen here were on official duty. They are IRT operatives who are investigating the k!lling of our policeman at the Benin airport in July. We have secured a warrant of arrest on him. The men eventually left him when the place became rowdy. He's a murder suspect, and he will still be arrested.
It's even better that he turns in to clear the allegations levelled against him bc he will still be arrested. It's a matter of time. So the men were on lawful duty and were justified to arrest him.'' Adejobi stated.
