In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the Elepe community in Ikorodu, Lagos, Motunrayo Olaniyi, a 30-year-old man, has been taken into police custody for allegedly stabbing his pregnant wife, Olajumoke, and subsequently setting her body on fire in their apartment at Amazing Grace Estate. The couple had reportedly been embroiled in a heated argument when the tragic event unfolded around 1 p.m. on Friday, October 4, 2024.

According to sources close to the couple, the confrontation escalated after Olaniyi accused his wife of infidelity, claiming that his younger brother was responsible for her six-month pregnancy. Olajumoke vehemently denied the allegations.

Neighbors revealed that this was not the first instance of violence between the couple. Prior to the fatal incident, Olaniyi had attacked Olajumoke in the presence of her mother, prompting family members to seek spiritual intervention at a church in an attempt to address his troubling behavior. A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted, “They did their traditional marriage three months ago when Jumoke was three months pregnant. Then, all of a sudden, problems started.”

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin, confirmed the details of the case. He stated, “On Friday, October 4, a distress call was received at the Ikorodu division regarding a domestic altercation between Olaniyi and his 25-year-old wife, Olajumoke. During the fight, the husband allegedly stabbed his wife to death, locked her in the room, and set the apartment ablaze before inflicting injuries on himself.”

Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives arrived at the scene, where the fire was extinguished. They discovered Olajumoke’s lifeless body on the floor, with stab wounds to her abdomen. Motunrayo was rescued with injuries, rushed to a nearby hospital, treated, and later taken into police custody.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple’s dispute led to the tragic outcome. The deceased’s body has been transferred to the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue for an autopsy as authorities continue their investigation into the matter.
