Cholera Outbreak Claims Lives Of Five Persons Allegedly In Niger State

At least five persons have been allegedly killed following an outbreak of cholera in the Katcha and Paikoro Local Government Areas of Niger State.

Confirming the outbreak, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Secondary and Tertiary Health, Dr Muhammad Gana who could not ascertain whether there are deaths at the moment said it happened in Katcha LGA and assessment is still being carried on.

Accordingly, he said, “The Ministry has dispatched a team of health professionals with commodities to curtail the outbreak.”

However, while speaking on condition of anonymity a healthcare worker in the facility stated that they have recorded at least four new cases and five deaths already, although the head of the hospital refused to speak to Journalists.

Also, findings have it that at the Paiko Modern Clinic in Paikoro LGA, there are cases of Cholera, as a ward has already been assigned to the affected patients.

According to findings, the health facility in Paiko has water challenges as the people go through untold hardship to source portable water.

A woman whose two children are affected and are currently on admission at the facility lamented the lack of potable water as the borehole in the hospital no longer functions.

Unconfirmed reports have it that, the Niger state government does not have vaccines to curtail the spread of cholera.

When contacted, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. Muhammad Gana stated that the Ministry is yet to receive a report of the outbreak of cholera in Paikoro Local Government.

Dr Gana also stressed the need for people to take their personal and environmental hygiene important, saying “Cholera is a Water and Sanitation problem”.
