In a dangerous turn of events, hundreds of Nigerian youths were seen collecting fuel from a truck that had overturned near Okurikang Junction in Odukpani Local Government Area around 4 p.m. on Saturday. The incident was attributed to a heavy downpour that rendered the Calabar-Itu federal road dangerously slippery, exacerbated by slow ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, which was en route from the Calabar depot to deliver fuel, either to Akwa Ibom State or other eastern states, had no license plates. The driver narrowly escaped injury and was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Ikpeme James, one of the youths involved, stated that fellow motorcycle riders parked their bikes a safe distance away before approaching the truck to extract fuel. “We have cautioned ourselves that nobody should ignite any iron, switch on their phones, hold matches, or slam anything that could spark fires,” he explained.
Despite the heavy rain and significant risks, both motorcycle riders and villagers were spotted climbing into the overturned truck to gather the fuel. The chaotic scene led to severe traffic congestion, with numerous other trucks carrying petroleum products stuck in the area.
Notably, no officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) or law enforcement were present at the scene to manage the situation or prevent potential hazards.
