Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed frustration over the recurring collapse of Nigeria’s national power grid.
It would be recalled that the National grid collapsed and this has once again left large portions of the country in darkness.
Reacting to the grid collapsed in a statement on his X handle, Obi criticized the persistent failure of Nigeria’s power infrastructure and its impact on the nation’s economic growth.
Describing the latest grid collapse as a “National shame,” Obi blamed the situation on leadership failure.
Also, he lamented the lack of effective policy implementation as key factors hindering Nigeria’s progress.
He pointed out the critical role power supply plays in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are vital for job creation and economic development.
Obi compared Nigeria’s situation to that of South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria, all of which generate and distribute significantly more electricity despite having smaller populations.
Nigeria, he noted, struggles to produce less than 10,000 megawatts of electricity, a figure far below the needs of its economy.
The former governor of Anambra State called for urgent and comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.
He further stated that the country’s economic decline is a direct consequence of governance deficits.
He emphasized the need for leadership that prioritizes sustainable development.
Obi’s remarks come amid increasing calls for structural reforms to address the nation’s power crisis.
The power crisis has continued to stifle economic growth and the well-being of citizens.
