Eight Suspects Jailed In Benin For Cybercrime, Fraud

Justice A.N. Erhabor of the Edo State High Court has sentenced eight persons to jail for cybercrime in Benin city.

New Telegraph reports that the fraudsters were sentenced to various prison terms for impersonation, fraud, and possession of fraudulent documents.

The convicts, Akhigbe Andrew Okhaifoh, Collins Osagie, Wisdom Imaduerehie, Imade Destiny, Chibueze Onyeji, Edubi Favour, David Precious, and Michael Osas Iguma, were prosecuted by the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Each convict faced a separate one-count charge relating to impersonation, obtaining by false pretenses, retention of crime proceeds, and possession of fraudulent documents.

One of the charges against Osagie read: “That you Collins Osagie, on or about the 30th of September 2024, within the jurisdiction of this court, had in your possession documents containing false pretenses, which you knew or ought to have known was fraudulent.”

This contravenes Sections 6 and 8(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.

The offence is punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

All defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.

The prosecution counsel represented by I.M Elodi, K.Y. Bello, Isa K. Agwai, A.A. Ibrahim Faisal, A.S. Bala-Ribah, and Ahmed Salihu to request their conviction.

The defense counsel pleaded for leniency, arguing that the convicts had shown remorse.

Justice Erhabor sentenced Okhaifoh, Imaduerehie, Osagie, Onyeji, Favour, Precious, and Destiny to two years imprisonment each, with ₦200,000 fine option.

Also, Michael Osas Iguma received a three-year sentence with a ₦200,000 fine option.

Additionally, all convicts forfeited their phones, laptops, and money from their bank accounts to the federal government.

Collins Osagie also forfeited a Lexus 2007 RX 350, which was deemed a proceed of his crime.

The convicts were arrested by the EFCC Benin Zonal Directorate following their involvement in internet fraud.

However, they have written undertakings to exhibit good behavior going forward.
