The Oyo State Police Command has arrested 47 suspects allegedly involved in a range of criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, and trailer hijacking. Police spokesperson SP Adewale Osifeso shared the update on behalf of the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, during a briefing on Friday.
The police recovered a significant array of items from the suspects, including an AK-47 rifle, two locally-made pistols, two vehicles, 170 bags of wheat, 1,130 cartons of adhesives, and N2.7 million in cash. Osifeso stated that the individuals were apprehended across various locations, following numerous complaints about their criminal activities throughout the state.
One group of suspected kidnappers was reported to have launched an armed assault on a herder’s camp in Sepeteri on August 30, terrorizing the area with sporadic gunfire. According to Osifeso, the suspects robbed the victims of their valuables and abducted several individuals, later contacting families with a ransom demand of N50 million. Coordinated efforts between police and local vigilance groups led to the capture of two members of the kidnapping syndicate, with N2.7 million recovered as part of the ransom collected by the group.
In another incident, a 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with the assault and rape of a girl with sickle cell disease. The suspect, along with an accomplice still at large, allegedly threatened to kill the victim if she resisted following them to a secluded location.
Commissioner Sonubi affirmed that investigations remain ongoing and emphasized the command’s commitment to maintaining safety in Oyo State.
