The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended two Chinese brothers, Wang Jiang and Wang Richard, along with two Nigerian associates, for allegedly attempting to illegally export solid minerals without proper authorization.
The arrest took place after intelligence reports from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) revealed suspicious activity at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. Jiang, who was about to board an international flight, was intercepted at the baggage screening point where airport officials found unidentified stones, believed to be solid minerals, wrapped in three separate packages in his luggage.
Following Jiang’s detention, EFCC operatives arrested his brother, Wang Richard, along with two Nigerian citizens, Donatus Agupusi and Michael Benneth Agu, at the agency's Enugu Zonal Directorate office. According to initial investigations, Agupusi, the owner of Great Wall Construction Limited, is the employer of all those involved. The investigation also uncovered that Jiang intended to transport the minerals to China for testing.
Further inquiries by EFCC operatives revealed that none of the suspects possessed the necessary permits for the mineral export. A spokesperson for the EFCC confirmed that the suspects would face legal proceedings following the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of the EFCC to curb illegal mining activities and protect Nigeria’s mineral resources.
