Music executive Banky W has opened up about the incredible journey of Grammy-winning artist Wizkid, sharing insights into the early days of his career and the relentless work ethic that led to his success. In a video circulating online, Banky W recalled signing Wizkid to his label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), long before Wizkid launched his own label, StarBoy Entertainment.
Banky W described the young Wizkid as a "studio rat," dedicating himself to music despite financial struggles. He revealed that Wizkid could barely afford studio time, often spending entire days in various studios, hoping for a brief opportunity to record. “He would go to any studio where they would let him hang out and just wait,” Banky W said, explaining that Wizkid’s determination and passion for music allowed him to make the most of whatever time he could get in the studio.
Banky W also shared the origin of Wizkid's stage name, explaining that the "Wiz" came from his extraordinary talent as the fastest songwriter Banky W had ever encountered. According to Banky W, Wizkid's ability to quickly create melodies and lyrics in the studio set him apart. “He would sit, listen to music, and start freestyling a melody that would become a song the whole world would want to sing," he said, noting that Wizkid’s genius-level songwriting ability came spontaneously, which is where the name “Wiz” originated.
Banky W's reflection highlights the incredible journey of a young artist who began with nothing but his talent, passion, and perseverance, and eventually built one of the biggest music brands in the world.
