The Anambra State government has initiated a thorough investigation into the arrest of Franklin Okechukwu Nwadialo, the newly elected chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, who was detained in Texas by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for his alleged involvement in a multi-million-dollar romance scam.
Nwadialo, 40, is accused of masterminding a $3.3 million online fraud targeting women across the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Nwadialo used fake identities on popular dating platforms, including Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café, luring victims with fabricated personal crises, such as family emergencies and military fines, to secure large monetary transfers.
Anambra’s Commissioner for Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, confirmed the state’s response to the news. “We initially learned of the arrest online. The government is now conducting its own investigation to ascertain the full scope of these allegations,” Nwabunwanne stated. He emphasized Anambra’s commitment to justice and the protection of its reputation.
Nwadialo’s arrest has sent shockwaves throughout Anambra State, where he was recently elected, bringing hopes for local progress. Residents and officials alike have voiced their disappointment, concerned about the impact of the scandal on the local government’s integrity.
In line with protocol, it is expected that Nwadialo’s deputy will assume leadership responsibilities for Ogbaru LGA while legal proceedings unfold. A senior Anambra State House of Assembly member, who spoke anonymously, noted that this transition will remain in place pending the outcome of the case.
The Anambra government has pledged to cooperate fully with U.S. authorities, underscoring its zero tolerance for corruption regardless of political affiliation. As the FBI continues its probe, Anambra officials have assured the public of transparency in handling the matter.
The news follows an initial report by DAILY POST on Nwadialo’s arrest in Texas.
