Ojochenemi Onje, a defence correspondent for *BusinessDay*, has been kidnapped by suspected "one-chance" operators in Abuja, according to sources from her workplace and local news outlet *SaharaReporters*. The abduction took place on her way home from the office, as confirmed by colleagues on Friday evening.

"One-chance" operations, a form of robbery where criminals pose as public or private transport operators, have become a significant security threat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Victims are often assaulted, robbed, or abducted upon boarding these vehicles. Tragically, some victims have lost their lives or suffered serious harm during such encounters.

In Onje's case, her abductors contacted her workplace, demanding N1 million for her release. “We need your prayers. The *BusinessDay* correspondent was kidnapped by one-chance operators, and they are asking for N1 million before they would release her,” a colleague told *SaharaReporters*.

The incident has been reported to both the Nigerian police and the military, though specific details on their response efforts remain uncertain. Meanwhile, friends and colleagues have been rallying in support, sending prayers for her safe return.

The dangerous “one-chance” scheme has claimed many lives in Abuja. Just last May, Kadoon Louisa Lornumbe, a middle-aged woman, was found dead near the Tipper Garage Bridge after falling victim to a similar abduction. Earlier in the year, the body of another unidentified woman was discovered on Airport Road in the Lugbe area, a grim reminder of the threat these criminals pose to residents of the nation’s capital.

Authorities continue to grapple with the ongoing wave of “one-chance” incidents, leaving residents on edge and concerned for their safety when using local transportation.
