At least four staff members of Areago Community High School in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, have been arrested following a violent altercation between the school’s students and local residents.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, reportedly began when a group of women from the surrounding community attempted to pass through the school premises on commercial motorcycles. The students, who were preventing access due to ongoing construction, clashed with the women, leading to tensions with local residents.
The staff members arrested include Mr. Ajayi, the Vice Principal of Administration, along with two senior teachers, Mr. Oladeji and Mr. Adekunle, as well as the school’s day guard. The four individuals are currently detained at the Owode Divisional Police Station in Ogbomoso.
According to sources, the clash was sparked by a dispute over the erection of a perimeter fence by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). A teacher, who requested anonymity, explained that the fence was being built due to the school's increasing vulnerability to external disturbances, with incidents of misconduct and trespassing becoming a daily problem.
Efforts to resolve the situation are reportedly underway, with various stakeholders working to broker an amicable settlement. It is expected that the arrested staff members will be released on bail soon.
