Police in Nasarawa State have arrested 33-year-old Yusuf Idris for allegedly impersonating the state's Commissioner of Police, CP Shehu Umar Nadada, and defrauding job seekers.
Idris, a resident of Ombi I in Lafia, was apprehended by officers from the State Intelligence Department after he fraudulently convinced victims that he could secure them jobs with the Nigeria Police Force and the Nasarawa State Hospital Management Board. According to Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ramhan Nansel, Idris defrauded one victim, Monday Akinde, of ₦300,000 under the false pretense of obtaining a job at the Nasarawa State Hospital Management Board.
The suspect then attempted to extort an additional ₦500,000 from Akinde, claiming he had access to a recruitment slot with the Nigeria Police Force. To make his ruse appear more credible, Idris took Akinde to the State Police Command Headquarters in Lafia, pretending to have connections that could offer job placements.
However, the plan unraveled when Idris's suspicious behavior raised concerns, leading to his arrest. Investigations revealed that Idris had been using fake promotion letters from Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, which he allegedly obtained from Facebook, and had ₦300,000 in cash, believed to be proceeds from his fraudulent activities.
CP Shehu Umar Nadada has urged any other potential victims of Idris's scam to come forward and has advised the public to remain cautious of employment fraudsters. He further warned that anyone caught engaging in similar fraudulent schemes would face legal consequences.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
