A local herbalist, Ismail Usman, is fighting for his life after a failed experiment with a self-made “bulletproof” charm left him severely injured in Kuchibuyi village, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on November 23.
Usman, known for his unconventional practices, reportedly shot himself in the stomach using a locally fabricated gun after fortifying himself with a charm he believed would protect him from harm. However, the charm failed to live up to its promise, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
The FCT Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday, with spokesperson Josephine Adeh stating that officers from the Byazhin Division responded to a distress call and rushed Usman to Kubwa General Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, Usman was later transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, where medical professionals are working to stabilize him.
Adeh described the act as a "misguided attempt" to test the effectiveness of the homemade charm. Following the incident, police conducted a search of Usman's residence and seized the firearm and various charms used in the experiment.
Usman is expected to face charges of unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria. FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, condemned the incident, highlighting the dangers associated with illegal firearms and unregulated practices.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
