Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has disclosed how he intervened to save former President Olusegun Obasanjo from execution during late General Sani Abacha’s regime in 1995.
Speaking at the maiden Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival organized by the Plateau State Government, Gowon recounted his efforts to prevent Abacha from carrying out the death sentence handed to Obasanjo over an alleged coup plot.
“I wrote a letter to Abacha, pleading with him that God made him a leader to do good and not evil,” Gowon stated. He revealed that he sent his wife to deliver the letter to Abacha in Abuja late at night, urging clemency for Obasanjo.
Obasanjo, who was arrested in 1995 and sentenced to death, maintained his innocence throughout. He spent three years in prison before his release in 1998, following Abacha’s death. He later became Nigeria’s president in 1999.
Reflecting on the outcome, Gowon said, “I’m glad that soon after, things changed. Not only did Obasanjo leave prison, but he also became our president. This is something that only prayers and sincerity can achieve.”
The event, where Gowon was the Special Guest of Honour and Obasanjo the Guest of Honour, highlighted the unity of Plateau State. Gowon praised the carol as a step towards fostering peace and commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for initiatives promoting coexistence amidst the state’s security challenges.
