A Nigerian man, Okediachi Emeka, has died after allegedly being tortured by police officers in Asaba, the capital of Delta State. The incident, which occurred on November 14, has raised serious concerns about police brutality and extra-judicial killings in the region.
According to the victim's brother, Okediachi Desmond, the attack took place in the early hours of November 14 after Emeka and two others were stopped by officers. Desmond claims the group was initially unaware that the men were police officers, mistaking them for kidnappers, and fled the scene. They were eventually cornered by police, who reportedly began shooting and beating them.
Desmond recounted that his brother was struck in the head with a rifle by the officers. "The police hit his head with a gun. They killed my brother," he said in a statement. "After the attack, they took him to a hospital and bandaged his head, but later forced him to record a video claiming that he had injured himself by hitting his head on a wall while running from the police."
Despite the claims made by the police, Desmond insists that his brother’s injuries were not self-inflicted, offering photos as evidence of the gunshot wounds on his brother’s head.
The police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, provided a different version of events, stating that the officers responded to a distress call and chased the suspects in a vehicle. According to Edafe, Emeka, the driver, was arrested, but initially managed to escape. When he was found later, he allegedly admitted to hitting his head on a wall. Edafe also stated that the police paid for Emeka’s medical expenses and recorded his statement at the police headquarters.
However, Desmond refutes this account, alleging that the police mishandled his brother's case and delayed necessary medical care. He added that his brother later began exhibiting unusual symptoms, including jerking, and was ultimately declared dead at a hospital after being rejected by the first medical facility.
The death has sparked outrage, with many calling for justice and accountability for those responsible. The Delta State Police Commissioner has ordered a full investigation into the incident, with assurances that any officers found guilty of misconduct will face legal consequences.
The case highlights ongoing concerns over police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria, which have fueled calls for reform within the country's law enforcement agencies.
