Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has reportedly been arrested by the Nigerian Police following a defamation petition filed by Tony Elumelu, the Chairman of UBA Group. Elumelu's complaint alleges that Farotimi made defamatory statements about him. The arrest took place at Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos.
Farotimi had previously raised concerns about threats to his safety and criticized what he described as attempts to suppress dissent. His arrest has drawn widespread criticism, including from activist Omoyele Sowore, who condemned the use of the police for settling personal disputes and called for Farotimi's release. However, some police officials have stated that Farotimi's arrest is part of an investigation into allegations including defamation and cyberstalking
