A devastating fire outbreak on Thursday at Umuocham Road in the World Bank Housing Estate, Aba, has destroyed goods worth millions of naira, leaving traders in anguish just weeks before the Christmas season.
The inferno, which reportedly began in a section of the affected area, quickly spread to nearby shops, causing extensive damage to businesses. Many traders, who had recently restocked in anticipation of holiday sales, were left counting their losses as their investments were consumed by flames.
Eyewitnesses said the fire erupted unexpectedly, sending shop owners scrambling to salvage whatever they could. Traders were seen weeping uncontrollably as thick smoke billowed from their destroyed properties.
The Abia State Fire Service promptly responded after receiving distress calls. According to the Chief Fire Officer, Arua Nnanna, personnel from the Aba division were mobilized to the scene to prevent the blaze from spreading further. "We successfully contained the fire from reaching more residential and commercial areas," Nnanna stated.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical surge originating from a wood fabrication point within the area. However, Nnanna noted that the final report on the incident is still pending. "While we suspect an electrical fault, we cannot confirm anything until investigations are concluded," he added.
The tragedy has sparked calls for heightened safety measures, especially as traders prepare for the busy holiday season. Many affected shop owners are urging authorities to ensure stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations to prevent future incidents.
The incident is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities small business owners face in the absence of adequate preventive infrastructure and support.
