The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a 42-year-old suspected drug trafficker, Egwu Phillip Inya, who claimed to be a building engineer, for attempting to collect illicit drugs concealed in imported pressure machines.
The arrest, confirmed in a statement by NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, took place on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Okeyson Motor Park in Enugu. Inya was caught while retrieving three pressure machines containing 7.4 kilograms of *Loud*, a potent synthetic strain of cannabis.
According to the statement, the illicit shipment had arrived at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) on November 29, 2024. NDLEA operatives from the MMIA Strategic Command monitored the package from customs clearance to a logistics company’s warehouse outside the airport. The collection point was later shifted to Enugu, prompting a follow-up operation that led to Inya’s arrest.
“The consignment’s final destination was altered at the last minute, but intelligence tracking allowed operatives to intercept the suspect in Enugu,” the NDLEA said.
The NDLEA disclosed that the pressure machines had been imported from South Africa, with the drugs cleverly hidden inside the equipment to evade detection.
This operation highlights the agency's commitment to curbing drug trafficking through intelligence-driven operations. Investigations into the source of the shipment and possible accomplices are ongoing.
