In a significant breakthrough, Nigerian Army troops have neutralized a notorious bandit known as "Al’jan" in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The death of "Al’jan," a key figure in the region's escalating banditry, has been hailed as a major relief for the terrorized residents. Originally from Niger Republic, "Al’jan," whose real name remains undisclosed, had relocated to Tsafe after working as a motorcycle taxi operator.
Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism expert in the Lake Chad Basin, revealed that his initial interactions as a taxi operator connected him with Fulani herders, which eventually led to his involvement in criminal activities.
“Over time, ‘Al’jan’ aligned with a notorious bandit group led by Hassan Bamamu, cementing his role in widespread acts of terror and banditry throughout the region,” Makama explained.
Leveraging his deep knowledge of Tsafe and its surroundings, "Al’jan" became a pivotal guide for criminal gangs, orchestrating numerous raids and kidnappings. He was linked to several high-profile murders, including those of Anas Umar Dan Kanti, Alhaji Musa Ille, and an unnamed Navy officer.
Three weeks ago, security forces ended his reign of terror during a coordinated operation involving soldiers and local vigilantes in Mada and Yandoton Daji. The team successfully ambushed "Al’jan" and his gang while they traversed the area, neutralizing multiple members.
Residents of Bamamu village, his last known hideout, confirmed his death after identifying his remains. The successful operation has restored hope for the people of Tsafe, particularly those along the Tsafe-Gusau road, which had been plagued by frequent attacks.
The death of "Al’jan" marks a significant victory in the ongoing efforts to restore peace and security to Zamfara State.
