The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended a 44-year-old cab driver, Andrew Nwanna, for allegedly robbing female passengers during taxi rides. The arrest, announced on December 31, followed numerous complaints about the suspect’s activities in Port Harcourt.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the police spokesperson, revealed in a statement that Nwanna, known for using a vehicle with a customized number plate, targeted female passengers and carried out a series of robberies.

According to Iringe-Koko, one of the incidents occurred on October 4 near Port Harcourt Primary School in the Old GRA area. “At approximately 8:00 a.m., Nwanna attacked a female passenger during a trip along Stadium Road, diverted the vehicle, and forcibly took her two phones,” she explained.

Another victim reported an encounter on October 10. Nwanna allegedly picked her up at Tombia Extension in GRA Phase 2 and was en route to Birabi Street. During the journey, he stopped near Skippers Restaurant, brandished a knife, and threatened the passenger. He reportedly stole her belongings, including an iPhone 13 valued at ₦850,000, an iPhone 15 worth ₦1.7 million, a Redmi 120 phone worth ₦200,000, and AirPods valued at ₦350,000.

“The suspect also took her Access Bank debit card, a Bible, $200 in cash, and left her stranded,” Iringe-Koko added.

Following a report by one of the victims, police launched an investigation and arrested Nwanna at Farm Road, Rumuosi, Obio/Akpor. During questioning, the suspect confessed to the crimes and implicated a 38-year-old accomplice, Garba Adamu, a Bureau de Change operator, who allegedly bought the stolen phones.

Adamu has since been arrested and admitted to purchasing the devices taken from the second victim.

Iringe-Koko confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that the suspects will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation.

The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and urged the public to report any suspicious activities.
