Rev. Fr. Michael Abang Obi, a Catholic priest in Cross River State, narrowly escaped death after his car exploded in Ogoja Local Government Area on New Year’s Eve.
Fr. Obi, the Administrator of St. Joseph de Worker Parish, Bansara, and Vicar for Priests in the Catholic Diocese of Ogoja, recounted the terrifying incident, which occurred moments after he stopped to assist a Reverend Sister and her group.
According to the priest, he had just returned from officiating a wedding at a neighboring parish when he encountered the Reverend Sister gathering firewood on the parish premises.
“I stopped the car to give them directions on where to find better firewood. After getting back into the car and preparing to drive off, there was a sudden explosion,” Fr. Obi explained.
He added that he was fortunate to have the car door open at the time of the blast, which allowed him to escape unharmed. “I am safe, thanks be to God,” he said, expressing gratitude for his survival.
The incident has raised concerns among parishioners and locals, as the cause of the explosion remains unclear. No injuries were reported, but investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
